Garifuna Language and Culture Annual Summer Camp In collaboration with SB Village Council, NGC SB Branch Seine Bight Village and Saint Alphonsus RC School

Rationale:
Considering rapid demographic shifts in our Garifuna villages, Garinagu need to be more proactive in ensuring that the Garifuna identity is preserved.
Goal:
The goal of this camp is to raise the awareness and consciousness of our youths regarding our own identity as Garifuna people and our responsibility to be good citizens.
Objective:
Participants will:
Learn Garifuna greetings
Speak at least 10 Garifuna words at native speaker level of competence
Learn vocabulary related to self
Practice Garifuna vocabulary while speaking about self
Learn Garifuna vocabulary related to fishing
Speak at least 5 words during practical dorey paddling activity
Construct at least 5 simple Garifuna sentences
Learn the lyrics and sing at least one Garifuna song at native speaker competence
Learn and demonstrate dancing “con regula” punta, gunjai, wanaragua and paranda
Reflecting on the ways of our ancestors, GARIMODE, we will discuss what it means to be a good citizen
Share their own experiences of good citizenry they have observed in the village
Learn and practice 8 virtues of Garifunaduou: GARIMODE The primacy of God, deep love and respect towards the spirit of our ancestors, significance of family, justice, strategic thinking, resilience, fearlessness, self-sufficiency, and consensual governance and universality
