Cultural Preservation

Cultural Preservation

The survival of the Garifuna people language and culture is not by accident.  It is a result of the resolve of our ancestors and those individuals and groups who have committed their lives to ensuring that Garifunaduou (Garifunahood) is preserved and passed on to our younger generations.  GARIU joins in the effort by supporting current community projects that aim to develop Garifuna identity in the context of providing opportunities for the development of soft, career, entrepreneurial, community development and leadership skills among Garinagu and other indigenous peoples in the communities where they reside.

Currently, GARIU collaborates with:

The Ligemeri Ubafu (light of strength) Drumming School

This is a locally owned small business venture which teaches Garifuna drumming and cooking. GARIU partners with the owners to provide education on financial and entrepreneurship skill, including marketing and improving the quality of service being provided so that more tourist will consider visiting the village.
